EAA’s B-17 Flying Fortress Aluminum Overcast was delivered to the U.S. Army Air Forces in May 1945. This was too late to see combat in World War II, but the big bomber was destined for an interesting history of its own, serving as a cargo carrier, a mapping platform, and even a sprayer in pest control and forestry operations. The airplane was donated to EAA in 1983 and painted in the colors of the 398th Bomb Group, after which it went through an exhaustive restoration to flying condition.
